They said DEI was just about "fairness." Now it might be fraud. The Trump administration is using the False Claims Act to investigate major U.S. companies, including Google and Verizon, over diversity hiring programs. The theory: if you hold a federal contract while using race-based preferences in hiring, you're effectively defrauding the government. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche's May memo called the False Claims Act a "weapon" to go after corporations that "continue to adhere to racist policies." Companies under scrutiny span automotive, pharmaceuticals, defense, and utilities. Some have already met with DOJ officials in person. The stakes are significant: False Claims Act violations can result in triple damages. Healthcare and defense contractors have paid hundreds of millions under this law. Legal observers say this application is unprecedented. The law traditionally targets contractors who bill for work never performed or inflate costs. Now it's being used to enforce Trump's executive order ending race and sex-based preferences in government work. Source: Wall Street Journal
