A CIA whistleblower told Congress that Anthony Fauci, formerly America’s most senior health official, steered official investigators away from concluding that Covid-19 originated in a Chinese laboratory.
Fauci, who retired in 2022, “significantly influenced” the CIA’s “neutral” findings on the source of the coronavirus by suggesting the agency consult experts who were aligned with his view that it occurred spontaneously, James Erdman told the Senate homeland security and governmental affairs committee.
“Dr Fauci’s role in the cover-up was intentional,” Erdman testified under oath on Wednesday. He claimed that CIA investigators were leaning towards the lab-leak theory until Fauci’s intervention.
“Dr Fauci influenced the analytical process and findings by leveraging his position to ensure the IC [intelligence community] consulted with a conflicted list of curated subject-matter experts, public-health officials and scientists,” he said.
Fauci, the 85-year-old former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), was not present for the hearing that was boycotted by every Democratic member.
Republicans have alleged that he rejected the theory that coronavirus was engineered and leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology because of a conflict of interest. Fauci has strenuously denied this.
