Drunk Driver Sentenced After Cousin Falsely Claims Responsibility - 조선일보

A man in his 30s who caused a traffic accident while driving under the influence and instructed his cousin to falsely claim he was driving has been sentenced to a one-year prison term, suspended for two years, along with 120 hours of community service.

Jeong Ji-eun, Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division 2 of the Changwon District Court, announced the ruling on the 26th. The defendant, Mr. A in his 30s, was charged with abetting a criminal’s escape.

Mr. B, the cousin in his 30s who was charged with aiding a criminal’s escape, was fined 3 million Korean won.

Mr. A was indicted for allegedly instructing Mr. B to falsely claim he was driving after colliding with a parked vehicle while intoxicated on a road in Gimhae City, South Gyeongsang Province, last November.

He, who works in the moving business, contacted Mr. B on the day of the incident and asked him to come to the scene. Mr. A reportedly said, “I drive for a living, so I cannot have any issues with my driver’s license. Please say you were driving instead of me,” before leaving the scene.

Mr. B complied with the request and made a false statement to police that he had caused the accident.

It was confirmed that Mr. A had previously been fined for drunk driving.
