Duarte voters to decide on $25-an-hour minimum wage for health workers - The Pasadena Star-News

Duarte’s voters will get the chance to vote on whether the city’s healthcare workers should receive a $25 minimum wage.

The proposed minimum wage ordinance, set for the November ballot, would set a baseline wage of $25 an hour for healthcare workers in the city. It would apply to privately owned health centers and facilities, such as acute psychiatric hospitals, acute care hospitals and clinics that are part of those hospitals.

The $25-an-hour minimum wage would also cover a variety of workers, including nurses, technicians, maintenance workers, janitors, housekeepers and clerical workers, but it would exclude managers and supervisors.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, the City Council had the option to either submit the ordinance for voters to decide on in the Nov. 8 general election or to adopt the measure.

The Council voted 4 to 0 to have the ordinance placed on the November ballot. Councilmember Jody Schulz recused herself from the vote because she is employed by City of Hope. Councilmember Vinh Truong also recused himself from the vote out of an abundance of caution.

In addition to placing the ordinance on the November ballot, the City Council also passed a resolution to have city staffers work on an analysis that would assess the economic impact of the ordinance, as well as how it would affect healthcare centers in Duarte.
