Edo Police Arrest Man Over False Claims of Schoolchildren Kidnap - SundiataPost
BENIN (Sundiata Post) – The Edo State Police Command has debunked reports alleging that bandits and kidnappers abducted schoolchildren in parts of the state, describing the claims as false and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
The Command said it had identified and arrested one Ernest Ugbomoiko, 42, of Afuze Community, as the individual responsible for originating and circulating the misleading information.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikedem, the Command stated that there was no incident of schoolchildren being kidnapped in Afuze, Ehor, Otuo, Agbede, Igueben, or any other part of Edo State.
“The report is false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents. There was no incident of schoolchildren being kidnapped in the mentioned areas or any other part of Edo State,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, reassured parents, guardians, school administrators and students that schools across the state remain safe.
The police also clarified that the deployment of security personnel to schools and other vulnerable locations was not in response to the false report. According to the Command, the deployments are part of proactive policing strategies that have been intensified on the directive of the Commissioner of Police.
