The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has offered whistleblowers a reward of between 2.5% and 5% of recovered assets for credible information leading to the recovery of stolen Nigerian assets held abroad.

Ola Olukoyede, EFCC chairman, disclosed the incentive while delivering a lecture at the Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime in the United Kingdom on Wednesday.

Olukoyede said the initiative was designed to encourage individuals with knowledge of illicitly acquired Nigerian assets to provide information that could assist the commission in tracing and recovering such assets.

He said effective asset recovery depends significantly on the ability of investigators to trace assets, obtain credible intelligence and secure judicial cooperation, particularly in cases involving assets moved across international borders.

The EFCC chairman also highlighted the importance of whistleblower protection in encouraging members of the public to provide information on financial crimes.

According to him, individuals who provide information leading to the successful recovery of stolen Nigerian assets abroad would be entitled to between 2.5% and 5% of the recovered assets.

The announcement comes as Nigerian authorities intensify efforts to trace and recover proceeds of corruption and financial crimes that have been moved outside the country.
