Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty has offered what he described as “sincere advice” to the Syrian authorities, urging them to work towards stability and national and territorial unity.
Speaking in an interview with Egyptian state television on Thursday, Abdel Aaty said Egypt “wishes all good for Syria, does not interfere in its affairs, and acts out of Arab responsibility, shared interests and history”. He referred to the past unity between the two countries, saying: “We were one people in two regions, and we must offer advice for the sake of stability in Syria.”
He said the Syrian authorities should engage in dialogue with all sects, given the country’s unique situation and its social, ethnic and religious diversity. He stressed that this approach would help close the door to pretexts for foreign intervention, prevent instability and protect the unity of the state.
He gave an example of what he described as “truth used for a false purpose”, which Israel claims in its intervention in southern Syria under allegations of protecting the Druze.
The Egyptian ministry noted that “Protecting sects is the responsibility of the ruling authority. This is why we advise communicating with all sects, such as the Kurds, Druze and Alawites. All of them are Syrians.”
He also called on Syria to look at the Egyptian experience, which he said “upholds the values of citizenship regardless of sect”.
