ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — After weeks of rumours, it was confirmed last week the whistleblower report into allegations of nepotism, harassment, bullying and a toxic workplace at Elections NL does indeed exist, and now there’s the question of how to deal with it.
Premier Andrew Furey said last week the report would be sent to the House of Assembly Management Commission for review, but not everyone agrees that’s the right move, largely because Speaker Derek Bennett chairs the commission, and he is alleged to have had the report for two to three months before finally sending it to Furey and Attorney General John Hogan just after the House rose for the summer.
The non-partisan House of Assembly Management Commision oversees financial and administrative operations in the House of Assembly. It has four Liberal members, two Progressive Conservative members and one NDP member.
Independent MHAs Paul Lane and Eddie Joyce issued a joint news release on Tuesday, June 14, saying they wrote to Bennett and asked him to recuse himself as chair of the commission while the report is deliberated.
“As the Speaker has reportedly been in possession of this report for the past 2-3 months, presumably without taking appropriate actions and is the subject of a complaint himself from both Lane and Joyce into his handling of the matter, the independent MHAs feel he may be in a conflict of interest,” reads the news release.
