Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, DFL, announced Tuesday afternoon his office issued fraud-related charges to nine individuals for about $3 million in fraudulent claims to Medical Assistance, the state’s Medicaid program.

Most of the 60 charges were levied to individuals in the Twin Cities metro area. However, the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit charged one person, Peter Jason Meilahn, of Duluth — the only care provider outside of the Twin Cities metro area — with defrauding the program of more than $2.2 million over about five-and-a-half years.

According to Ellison, Meilahn claimed to have run psychotherapy services in Duluth and submitted 27,400 individual false claims for services that were not rendered. He also frequently continued billing Medicaid for months after he stopped treating the patients, Ellison said on Sept. 29.

“Patients listed in Meilahn’s claims told us time and time again that Meilahn did not provide the services he claimed to provide,” Ellison said at a press conference Tuesday...
