Elon Musk reignited his ongoing rivalry with Meta on Thursday, posting “Can’t trust WhatsApp” while reacting to a class action lawsuit that has raised questions over the messaging platform’s privacy claims.
The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court, alleges that WhatsApp intercepted users’ private messages despite promising end-to-end encryption and shared them with third parties, including consulting firm Accenture.
Responding to a post on X about the case, Musk wrote, “Can’t trust WhatsApp.” In a separate post, he promoted X Chat, saying it offers “actual privacy” for messaging and calls.
Meta-owned WhatsApp rejected the allegations, stating in a response on X that “the claims in this lawsuit are categorically false and absurd.” The company added that it has used the Signal protocol for end-to-end encryption for a decade, ensuring that messages are only accessible to the sender and recipient.
On X, WhatsApp explains that its encryption ensures “no one outside of the chat, not even WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share” messages, as only users hold the keys required to unlock them.
Hours after Elon Musk's post, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov also criticised WhatsApp’s privacy claims on social media, writing that its encryption “may be the biggest consumer fraud in history” and alleging that messages are shared with third parties.
"Telegram has never done this, and never will", he added.
