Elon Musk's Doge compromised sensitive Social Security data: Whistleblower - India Today

A whistleblower has alleged that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) duplicated and transferred highly sensitive Social Security Administration (SSA) data and stored it on a poorly secured cloud server. The move may have exposed millions of Americans’ personal details and violated federal privacy rules.

The complaint, filed Tuesday by Charles Borges, the SSA’s chief data officer, claims Doge officials created a live copy of the nation’s Social Security numerical identification database and stored it on a server that lacked independent oversight. According to him, only Doge staff could access the system, leaving it vulnerable to misuse.

"These actions constitute violations of laws, rules, and regulations, abuse of authority, gross mismanagement, and creation of a substantial and specific threat to public health and safety," the complaint states.

The whistleblower filing warned that the copied database has highly personal details about US citizens and residents, including names, dates and places of birth, race and ethnicity, addresses, phone numbers, names of relatives, and Social Security numbers.

According to the whistleblower, these information are a "goldmine for bad actors" and could enable large-scale identity theft, fraud, and disruption of essential government services.
