Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron have sued political commentator Candace Owens over false claims that the French president’s wife is trans.
The French president and his wife filed a defamation lawsuit against the American far-right political commentator on 23 July.
The Macrons describe Owens’ alleged actions, which included releasing an eight-part audio and video series on the false trans conspiracy theory, as a “relentless and unjustified smear campaign”.
The defamation complaint, which is 219 pages long, was filed in Delaware state court on Wednesday and names Owens and her business entities, which are incorporated in the Democratic state.
It claims that Owens perpetuated “demonstrably false” claims about Brigitte’s gender identity across her social media platforms to rally her “frenzied fan base” in “pursuit of fame”.
“These lies have caused tremendous damage to the Macrons,” the lawsuit reads, adding that the false claims subjected the French first lady and president to “a campaign of global humiliation, turning their lives into fodder for profit-driven lies”.
“Owens has dissected their appearance, their marriage, their friends, their family, and their personal history — twisting it all into a grotesque narrative designed to inflame and degrade,” the lawsuit claims.
