According to a report from Yahoo Finance, industry groups have cautioned that recent tax and employment regulations are pushing companies to a critical point, potentially making it harder for young people to find work. New statutory sick pay rules, which take effect on Monday, have prompted these warnings as unemployment reaches its highest level in five years and youth joblessness exceeds the average across the European Union.

The Confederation of British Industry stated that the nation's labor market risks becoming less adaptable than that of France, with businesses finding it difficult to manage additional expenses. A representative from the group noted that employment costs have reached a critical juncture, citing increases in National Insurance contributions, business rates, and a significant rise in the National Living Wage over the past four years. The consequence, they argued, is hindered investment, stalled growth, and young individuals being excluded from employment.

The new regulations, part of the Employment Rights Act advanced by Angela Rayner during her tenure as deputy prime minister, grant employees the right to statutory sick pay starting from their first day of absence, rather than the fourth day. The law also introduces improved paternity leave rights.
