OPINION: Brooke Van Velden has announced she’s stepping down. But before she goes, she seems determined to do a bit more damage along the way. And as always in her sights, workers. Many of them low paid and vulnerable, many of them women.
Her latest move is the Employment Leave Bill – a complete overhaul of the Holidays Act which has passed its first reading and could become law before the election. The bill is pitched as making it “easy” to pay workers correctly when they take leave. That sounds harmless enough. It isn’t. In practice, it means paying people less when they take time off.
