The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act throughout the summer. You can too by creating a short video for your own social media followers showing that you support equal pay for equal work.
The Equal Pay Act of 1963 prohibits sex-based wage discrimination and requires that men and women in the same work establishment receive equal pay for equal work in jobs that are substantially equal and performed under similar working conditions. Job content (not job titles) determines whether jobs are substantially equal. Although the law was passed 60 years ago, each year there are still hundreds of pay discrimination charges filed with the EEOC, including more than 950 in Fiscal Year 2022, which was the first increase in Equal Pay Act charges in three years.
Last year, the U.S. women’s professional soccer players association signed a historic equal pay agreement to ensure pay equity for its players; during the preceding legal battle, the EEOC filed an amicus brief in court on the players’ behalf. As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, and as the U.S. women’s national team gears up for the 2023 World Cup beginning in July, we can educate social media users about their right to equal pay and help to #LevelThePayingField for all workers.
