The government is launching a large-scale investigation into illegal patient solicitation and introduction targeting cancer patients, so-called "payback" practices in which part of medical expenses are refunded, and high-priced non-covered treatments lacking sufficient medical evidence. To encourage reporting of illegal acts, the government will actively utilize a reward system for whistleblowers, offering up to 3 billion won in compensation.
The Administrative Investigation Task Force for Abnormal and Fake Medical Practices at the Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on June 18 that it is immediately commencing on-site investigations into suspected improper and illegal medical practices targeting cancer patients.
Previously, on June 10, the task force, in cooperation with expert groups, announced its plan to investigate abnormal practices in the medical field, referring illegal activities to investigative authorities and handling unethical cases through the ethics committees of professional organizations. It is also reported that the task force has completed a significant review of internal data regarding recent allegations in the media about payback schemes targeting cancer patients.
