The European Commission has launched a whistleblower tool for people to report suspected breaches of the EU’s AI Act.

The commission says that the tool will provide a “secure and confidential” channel for individuals to report to the EU’s dedicated AI office.

The EU body says that the tool will allow whistleblowers to provide relevant information in any of the EU official languages and in any relevant format.

Encryption

“The tool offers a secure way to report potential violations of the law that could endanger fundamental rights, health, or public trust,” it states, adding that “the highest level” of confidentiality and data protection are guaranteed through certified encryption mechanisms.

The system will also allow whistleblowers to receive updates on the progress of their report and respond to additional questions without compromising their anonymity.

“It is important to note that legal protection against retaliation under the Whistleblower Directive will only extend to reports concerning infringements of the AI Act from 2 August 2026 onwards,” the commission says.

It adds, however, that some AI-related activities – particularly those linked to product safety, consumer protection, privacy and personal data, or information security – may already fall within the directive’s scope.
