NEW ORLEANS - After serving the city of Ellensburg in the capacity of police chief from 1996 to 2001, Anne Kirkpatrick is now chief of a far larger city down south.
Kirkpatrick was confirmed as New Orleans' top cop on Thursday in a 6-1 vote by the New Orleans city council. As police chief, Kirkpatrick will be tasked with policing a city with a population of nearly 400,000, a large leap from Ellensburg's 19,596 residents.
The hiring of Kirk Patrick comes after she was fired as the city of Oakland's police chief in February 2020. Kirkpatrick was terminated in a unanimous vote by Oakland's Police Commission. Kirkpatrick won a whistleblower lawsuit, claiming that she was axed because she wouldn't perform special favors for commission members. Kirkpatrick was awarded $337,000 in monetary damages.
