KOTA KINABALU: A former government agency director and senior government officer have been detained for facilitating false claims amounting to over RM175,000, for a contractor.
The former director, who is still serving after being transferred to another department, allegedly accepted over RM60,000 for approving the claims.
The suspects, aged 44 and 50, were arrested when they came to provide statements at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office here at 12.30pm, on Tuesday (Aug 2).
According to a source, the suspects had used the licenses of several companies to validate the claims for the supply of food and drinks amounting to more than RM175,000.
“They are believed to have masterminded the false claims,” said the source.
“However, the food and drinks were never supplied nor any programme organised (for the purpose of supplying the food and drinks).
“At the same time, the ex-director is believed to have received monthly payments amounting to more than RM60,000 from the contractor between 2017 and 2019,” the source added.
When contacted, Sabah MACC director Datuk S Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, saying the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) and Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
He said both suspects will be brought to the Magistrate’s Court here on Wednesday (Aug 3) for a remand order.
“The arrests were made possible through cooperation between the MACC and the Integrity Unit of a government agency,” he said.
