Former NFL running back Clinton Portis will spend six months in federal prison and another six in home confinement for his role in a healthcare scheme involving other retired NFL players.
The 40-year-old Portis previously pled guilty to fraud in September, admitting that he received almost $100,000 by filing false medical claims for equipment that was never provided.
Prior to Thursday's sentencing, the Department of Justice explained Portis's recommended sentence by explaining that he only recently admitted he was guilty at a retrial following a hung jury in his first trial. Furthermore, the DOJ explained in its pretrial filing, Portis only recently repaid the money.

On Instagram after his sentencing, Portis thanked his legal team, the international law firm of Baker Botts LLP.
'I would fight with you all any day!' Portis wrote alongside a picture of his attorneys. 'You all believed in me from the start & worked tirelessly to prove my innocence! We came up short & things didn't go as planned but the bond created will last forever! Thank you all!'
Portis also wrote a message to his critics on Instagram: 'You can't embarrass me or make me feel uncomfortable. I'm SOLID.'
