Ex-NYC Correction officer accused of affair after whistleblowing - New York Daily News

A former Rikers Island guard says that she was unfairly tarred with accusations of having an affair with an inmate and then retaliated against when she alerted jail investigators about a prisoner who tried to recruit her for drug smuggling.

Latonya Nunn-Cornish, who now works for Disney in Florida, denied that she had an inappropriate relationship with an inmate or violated any Department of Correction regulations, but said she was targeted after she blew the whistle.

Nunn-Cornish said an inmate tried to recruit her as a drug mule on Jan. 27, 2020 and asked her to bring contraband into Vernon C. Bain Center, a jail on Rikers Island.

“I was approached one night by the inmate,” she told the Daily News. “He said, ‘I’m going to need you to do me a favor.’ He gave me a phone number and said that I was supposed to meet somebody by my car in the parking lot and bring a package. I took the number to give it to an investigator that I knew,” she said.

The Department of Investigation memo regarding her accusation confirms that she reported the incident to investigators. DOI had started looking into her behavior five days before that.

City investigators subpoenaed video surveillance inside the jail and saw Nunn-Cornish repeatedly go into a storage closet with an inmate on Jan. 16, 21 and 22 for short periods of time, according to investigative records. The storage area did not have cameras inside and did not record whatever happened inside.
