Two former Ojai employees are suing the city for wrongful termination as whistleblowers who uncovered violations related to the parks and recreation department.
The separate lawsuits blame the city of Ojai, City Manager Ben Harvey and upper management for unfairly firing the parks and recreation employees after they reported financial impropriety. They also reported other city employees who violated a strict city ordinance by consuming alcohol in public at sporting events.
Court hearings for the lawsuits filed by Matthew Davis, a former recreation manager, and Renee Mora, a former recreation leader who was only about nine months into the job and a probationary employee, are set for December.

'Uncover all the rocks'
According to Davis' complaint, Harvey in April 2024 had instructed him to "uncover all the rocks." In doing so, he investigated operational issues of the parks and recreation department.
