Ex-superintendent files new lawsuit against MSCS, claiming false rumors and gender discrimination - Action News 5

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A new lawsuit filed by Dr. Marie Feagins now includes claims of sex-based discrimination against Memphis-Shelby County Schools.

The latest litigation in Feagins’ legal fight against the school board was filed on Wednesday.

Feagins claims false allegations of a sexual nature were being circulated about her. Her lawsuit also claims she was mistreated because of her gender, pointing to men in similar positions at MSCS being treated “more favorably” despite “documented and investigated misconduct.”

Action News 5 confirmed through attorney Murray Wells that a former MSCS employee who worked closely with Feagins asked the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to investigate her claim of being sexually harassed by the former superintendent.

Attorney Wells says they are awaiting the outcome of the EEOC’s investigation before filing a lawsuit against Dr. Feagins, if necessary.

Action News 5 has reached out to Dr. Feagins’ attorney for comment, but has not yet heard back.

In her lawsuit, Feagins included former Superintendent Dr. Joris Ray and former Co-Interim Superintendent John Barker as examples of men who were treated more favorably despite misconduct allegations.

Ray resigned in August 2022 after an investigation was launched into allegations of extramarital affairs with school district staff.

Barker was placed on administrative leave in September 2022 and decided to retire after being absolved of wrongdoing following an internal investigation.
