Exclusive: Professor Tan Sues to Lift Departure Ban Over False Claims - 조선일보

The Ministry of Justice confirmed on the 2nd that it had imposed a departure ban on Morse Tan (Dan Hyunmyeong), a professor at Liberty University in the U.S. Professor Tan filed an administrative lawsuit in response.

The professor filed a lawsuit against the Minister of Justice to cancel the entry and exit ban and applied for a suspension of execution at the Seoul Administrative Court the day before. The case is being reviewed by Presiding Judge Wi Ji-hyun of the Administrative Division 1.

Professor Tan, a Korean-American, is under investigation by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency for allegedly spreading false information that President Lee Jae Myung was involved in a violent crime during his youth and was detained in a juvenile detention center, damaging his reputation.

Professor Tan, who resides in the U.S., entered the country on the 28th of last month. Police reportedly went to Incheon International Airport to request his attendance for questioning, but he did not comply and submitted a written explanation for non-attendance and a request to avoid the investigator. Subsequently, the police requested the Ministry of Justice to impose a departure ban, citing concerns about flight risk. A departure ban is a measure to prevent foreigners from leaving the country while they are under domestic investigation or trial.
