Exmouth care home hit by serious whistleblowing concerns to close - Devon Live

An Exmouth care home that was nominated for a prestigious national award two years ago is now closing after serious whistleblowing concerns led to external intervention being required and inspectors deemed it to be 'inadequate'.

Cranford Residential Home was inspected by independent health and social care regulator Care Quality Commission (CQC) in February and it found residents were not safe and were at risk of avoidable harm.

The home in Cranford Avenue will be closing within the 'next few weeks' after the last resident has moved to new accommodation. It currently still has a 'small number' of residents and is supporting them as they move to their new homes.

The care provider has blamed the closure on a number of factors including the 'disappointing', cost of living crisis , and a 'staffing crisis' in adult social care.

The home was rated as 'good' by the CQC in August 2018 and in November 2021, it was reported it had been shortlisted for the Commitment to Workforce Development at the Caring UK Awards, which recognise excellence and achievement within the care sector across the UK.

However, the home has since undergone a significant decline. The CQC has found there to be significant staffing issues with employees stating they were 'firefighting', exhausted and demoralised, and claimed a 'bullying' culture existed.
