It seems like only yesterday we were all dunking on Shazam: Fury of the Gods for being DC Entertainment’s biggest box office flop ever, but then along came The Flash’s erratic and allegedly abusive star Ezra Miller, to make what should have been a smash hit into one of superhero media’s most spectacular financial failures of all time.
The Flash is on track to be one of Warner Bros.' biggest flops of all time and perhaps one of the worst-performing superhero films in history, per the analysis of the entertainment news website The Direct. The film has grossed less than $250 million worldwide in three weeks against an estimated total budget of $400 million, when including marketing and production. But much like when Shazam’s Zachary Levi came out as an anti-vaxxer, The Flash didn’t need middling critical reviews to falter at its opening; the project was hobbled before it even hit theaters by news of Miller’s bizarre behavior and alleged history of abuse in public and private, which has made headlines around the world.
To recap: Miller was first reported to have assaulted someone in 2020, when they were filmed apparently choking a woman in Iceland. In early 2022, Miller traveled to Hawaii, where they were the subject of numerous calls to police for violent behavior and disorderly conduct, including allegedly threatening the life of a married couple who provided Miller with housing in a hostel.
