Fact Check: 2021 Photo Shared with False Claim of Injured Child in Myanmar Drone Attack - Newschecker

Photo of a child wounded in the recent attack on the camps of insurgent outfit ULFA-I in Myanmar.

The outlawed insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) claimed that the Indian Army carried out a drone attack on its camps in Myanmar’s Sagaing region between 2am to 4 am on Sunday (July 13), killing three of its senior leaders.

Shortly after the allegations went viral, a photo claiming to show a child wounded in the alleged Indian attack on the ULFA-I camps in Myanmar surfaced online. Newschecker, however, found the image to be old and unrelated.

Fact Check/Verification

A Google Lens search on the image led us to a Facebook post by Myanmar-based outlet The Irrawaddy from October 2021. Carrying the same photo of a wounded child, it stated, “One killed, six injured in Moe Bye. A civilian was killed and six others, including two children, were injured by regime artillery in Moe Bye on the Shan-Kayah state border, according to a rescue team.” Notably, Moe Bye is a place in Myanmar.

The post credited the image to the Mobye (Moe Bye) Rescue Team.

We then skimmed through the Facebook page of the Mobye Rescue Team and found that the photo was first shared on October 24, 2021, to show children under treatment at the hospital following the attack.

Carrying the same photo, a report by Shan Herald News, dated October 24, 2021, corroborated with the above mentioned details, and stated that one woman was killed, and...
