Former U.S. President Barack Obama did not say that pedophiles deserve the same rights as the LGBTQ+ community or that a book called “Gender Queer” shaped his life, contrary to claims in an article being shared by social media users that was published by a website fact-checked by Reuters several times in the past.

The posts include screenshots of an article titled “Barack Obama Says Pedophiles Deserve ‘Same Rights’ as 2SLGBTQI+” published by The People’s Voice (archive.li/LFTld) on July 19, 2023.
The article includes a screenshot of a tweet apparently by Obama that reads, “Minor-attracted persons deserve human rights.”
The tweet is fabricated, however. It does not exist on his official Twitter accounts (twitter.com/BarackObama), (twitter.com/obamainaugural) or in a database of his tweets (here), (here).
In the body of the article, The People’s Voice claims, “Obama admitted that his life has been shaped by homosexual and pornographic literature of the global elite are currently forcing on our children.”
The story features an authentic post by Obama on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter (here), about the books he says shaped his life and his views on the rise of book bans in America (more on that, here , here ).
Obama’s post mentions LGBTQ literature, saying, “It’s no coincidence that these ‘banned books’ are often written by or feature people of color, indigenous people, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.”
