Fact Check-Claims about gun laws and homicide rates in Honduras ... - Reuters.com

Honduras does not ban its citizens from owning weapons, nor does it have the highest murder rate in the world, and Switzerland does not require its citizens to own guns, and it does not have the lowest homicide rate. Yet, social media users are spreading these false claims with an online infographic.

Examples of these claims can be seen (here), (tinyurl.com/mtpabmvt). The infographic says that both countries have a population of 8.2 million people. It then adds that Honduras bans its citizens from owning guns and that it has the highest homicide rate in the world, and that Switzerland requires its citizens to own guns and has the lowest murder rate. This information is inaccurate, however.

Honduras allows anyone over 21 to own firearms, if the person has a license. This permit can be acquired after passing a series of examinations, a firearms handling course and a background check (here).

The country does not have the highest murder rate in the world. According to figures shared by the World Population Review, El Salvador tops the list for 2023, followed by Jamaica, Lesotho and Honduras (here).

As of May 2023, Honduras has a population of 9.7 million (www.ine.gob.hn/V3/).

Switzerland offers permits to carry guns, although it is not mandatory to do so. A person must prove a need to carry a weapon, pass a firearm handling exam and meet certain legal requirements (here).
