Fact Check: False Claim of 7 soldier deaths in Manipur ambush circulated online - dfrac.org

A claim circulating, amplified by several Pakistan-based accounts, alleged that 7 Indian Army soldiers were killed in an ambush by Kuki militants in Bishnupur, Manipur, and over 17 soldiers had died in the state during September 2025.

Multiple other users have shared a similar claim, which can be viewed here and here.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, we found the claim to be misleading. According to a report by The Indian Express dated 20 September 2025, the incident in Bishnupur involved an ambush by unidentified terrorists targeting an Assam Rifles convoy. The attack resulted in the deaths of two personnel, Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap, and left five others injured. The Assam Rifles officially confirmed these casualties.

Other credible media outlets reported the same details, with no mention of 7 fatalities.

The report further noted that the last comparable ambush in Manipur occurred in September 2024, when one CRPF personnel was killed and two police officers were injured near Jiribam town. Importantly, no reliable media or official sources have confirmed claims of 17 or more security personnel deaths in Manipur during September 2025.

Conclusion

Thus, from the fact check, it is evident that the viral claim is false. Verified reports confirm that two Assam Rifles personnel were killed in the Bishnupur ambush, not seven, and there is no evidence of 17+ security force fatalities in Manipur this month.
