Fact check: False claim that George Soros wanted in Russia, declared terrorist in China - USA TODAY

The claim: George Soros is wanted in Russia and has been declared a 'global terrorist' in China

American billionaire George Soros, who founded the Open Society Foundations in 1993 to financially support democracies worldwide, has been the target of frequent falsehoods online. Social media users now claim multiple countries have formally deemed him a threat.

A Facebook post shared March 24 shows two images: one of Soros and another of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The Russian govt announces an arrest warrant against the billionaire George Soros, the main promotor (sic) of the war in Ukraine," reads text in the post. "China Officially declares George Soros a global terrorist."

The post generated over 900 interactions in less than two weeks. Similar posts have generated hundreds of interactions on Facebook and Twitter.

But a spokesperson for the Open Society Foundations told USA TODAY the claim is false. There is no evidence Soros is wanted in Russia or has been declared a terrorist in China.

USA TODAY reached out to the social media users who shared the claim for comment.

No arrest warrant for Soros

The claim about the arrest warrant is baseless, according to Jonathan Birchall, a spokesperson for the Open Society Foundations.
