Fact Check: Images Of 2013 Indonesian Plane Crash Viral With False Claims - Newsmobile

A few viral images showing a plane wrecked in a water body are doing rounds on social media. Many users are sharing the images claiming them to be of a plane crash in Indonesia, killing 178 people.

A Facebook user posted the viral pictures with the caption:

ইননালিললাহি ওযা ইননালিললাহি রাজিউন।

ইনদোনেশিযায বিমান দুরঘটনায 178 জন মারা গেছে। ।আললাহ সবাই কে জাননাত দান করুক(আমিন)

(English Translation: We belong to Allah and to Allah we shall return.

178 killed in plane crash in Indonesia. . May Allah bless everyone with Jannah Amen)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral pictures and found the claims to be false.

Looking closely at the image we can see LION written on the body of the plane. A simple google search informed us that it is the logo of LION air– an Indonesian airline. Further, we conducted a Google Keyword Search to confirm whether any recent plane crash of Lion air took place in Indonesia or not. We could not find any source informing us of any incident happening in the recent past.

To check the authenticity of the claims we then ran a Reverse Image Search of the viral pictures individually.
