The claim: Video shows Elon Musk saying he intends to buy Meta
After purchasing and taking over Twitter, Elon Musk is no longer the richest person in the world. Tesla’s stock has plunged since the start of the year, and its investors have expressed frustration with Musk since he took over the social media company.
Nevertheless, a Dec. 2 Instagram post (direct link, archived link) claims to show Musk saying he intends to expand his media empire.
It appears as if Musk says in the video, "I predict that tomorrow I will buy the entire Meta company. Facebook and Instagram will be mine too."
The post was liked more than 60,000 times. It also went viral on TikTok.
But the video is digitally altered. Musk has made no such announcement about purchasing Meta. The video comes from an interview he gave in April, during which he makes no reference to Meta.
USA TODAY reached out to Twitter and the Instagram users who shared the claim for comment.

Altered video comes from TikTok account promoting lip-syncing app
The video of Musk featured in the post comes from an interview he gave in April with the curator of the TED Talks organization, Chris Anderson. The interview is on YouTube, and in it, Musk is seen wearing the same white shirt and black jacket as in the Instagram post.
Musk does not mention Meta in the interview.
