New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill did announce that 6,600 noncitizens made it onto New Jersey's voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024 because of a software error that caused people who answered truthfully that they weren't U.S. citizens to be improperly labeled as citizens.
What's False:
Sherrill said fewer than 400 of these people, who were scattered across the state with different partisan affiliations, cast ballots. Neither Trump nor Mullin provided evidence to back the number in their claim.
In July 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed in a post on Truth Social, his social media platform, that the Department of Homeland Security found 35,152 registered voters in New Jersey who were not U.S. citizens. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin also shared the claim earlier that day, saying that DHS released the number a week prior.
