The claim: PNC Bank locations won’t have coins starting in October
Conspiracy theories claiming global powers will soon implement a "cashless society" have endured for years. The most recent iteration of the trend is a rumor that states one of the country's largest banks will soon be getting rid of all coins.
“Beginning in October, coins will no longer be available at the PNC Banks,” reads part of a Sept. 13 Facebook post that was shared more than 450 times in two days. “We were told all the Banks will soon begin to turn in their coins to the Gov’t and will no longer be available to the public or to a business. ... Soon to be a cashless society."

But PNC Bank said it has no such plans, and the U.S. Mint said it continues to put billions of new coins into circulation.
USA TODAY reached out to the user who shared the claim for comment.
PNC Bank locations will continue using coins
A spokesperson for the bank told USA TODAY the claim was false.
“PNC does and will continue to accept coins in our full-service branches across the country,” said Marcey Zwiebel, the bank’s director of external business communications in North America.
The bank did remove coin-counting machines from its branches in April 2016, though Zwiebel said its full-service locations continued to accept rolled coins for deposit.
