Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley was not arrested by U.S. Marines for treason in late September 2023, contrary to an article shared online.
The claim stems from an article published on the website Real Raw News on Sept. 25 that cites an unnamed source within Gen. Milley’s office.
The falsehood was shared on various platforms, including Facebook and TikTok.
The claim circulated after former U.S. President Donald Trump made comments on his Truth Social account over reports first published in 2021 that Milley called his Chinese counterpart Li Zuocheng both ahead of Trump’s election defeat and after the result to reassure him that the U.S. would not attack China, and if there were to be an attack, that he would alert him ahead of time.

“This is an act so egregious that, in times gone by, the punishment would have been DEATH,” Trump wrote on his account on Sept. 23.
Gen. Milley was not arrested by U.S. Marines on treason charges.
The Real Raw News website carries a disclaimer on its “About” section that content on the website “contains humor, parody, and satire.”
There are no credible reports that Gen Milley was arrested.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) website had not published a press release announcing such a charge as of Sept. 27, nor does the Joint Chiefs of Staff website include any related announcement.
