On February 24, 2026, President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address, highlighting his administration’s work on the economy, immigration, crime and taxes. During the speech, he made many strong claims about his accomplishments. However, after reviewing his statements, it was found that several were exaggerated, misleading, or false.

Trump said his administration removed 2.4 million Americans from food stamps. This needs more explanation. About 2.4 million people may lose benefits because of new work rules for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Many of these changes have not happened yet. People are losing benefits because the rules are stricter, not necessarily because they are earning more money.

“Warrior Dividend” Payments

Trump claimed that service members received $1,776 payments funded by tariffs. This is false. The money actually came from a housing fund approved by Congress as part of a large domestic spending bill. It was not paid for by tariffs.

Crime in Washington, D.C.

The president said there is “almost no crime” in Washington, D.C. While crime rates have decreased and homicides are down compared to last year, crime has not disappeared. There have still been murders, assaults and car thefts reported in 2026. Therefore, his statement was exaggerated.
