These statements were previously heard in 2018 and 2019 during the push for stricter voter-identification requirements, and in 2023 he repeated them during the pre-election campaign and again spoke the day after the Republicans’ defeats.

“All we need is a voter ID. You walk into a grocery store, you need to show ID. You walk into a gas station, you show ID,” Trump said during breakfast with Republican senators.

In reality, Americans do not need to show ID to buy groceries or fuel. In most cases, IDs are requested only for alcohol, tobacco products, certain medicines, and when paying by check. Sometimes sellers may ask for ID in other circumstances, but that is not the rule, it’s the exception.
Such cases are not accurate: in most cases shoppers do not reveal their identity, and every day millions of people buy fuel without showing ID and without interacting with store staff.
