FAIRFIELD — The state has opened an investigation into the Registrar of Voters Office following claims of wrongdoings heading into the recent primary and a hostile work environment between the two elected registrars and their staff.
The Secretary of the State’s Office got involved this summer after receiving repeated complaints from different parties in town. Those allegations ranged from workplace disputes to tampering with voting machines and erasing information on polling locations from the town’s website, according to a 107-page document from First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick’s office filed to the Secretary of the State.
The document includes a report compiled by Cathleen Simpson, the human resources director for the town, that says Democratic Registrar of Voters Matthew Waggner and Republican Registrar of Voters Steve Elworthy struggled to cooperate to fulfill their duties. The bigger issue, it claims, was that Waggner refused to work with Republican Deputy Registrar of Voters Cathy Politi. Elworthy has since resigned.
Waggner claims in a statement that the relationship between the registrars office and Kupchick’s administration was amicable until this spring, when the administration got more involved in his office and inserted themselves into day-to-day operations.
