A poster circulating in South African xenophobic circles, which claims people can earn R250 for “anyone who can catch” undocumented foreign nationals and take them to Home Affairs, is fake.
The poster is designed to look like an official public notice.
It carries the South African coat of arms above a heading of “Government of South Africa”, contains an image of the national flag, and lists a fake address allegedly for the Department of Home Affairs.
But the government has warned that the notice is false.
“A public notice circulating online claiming a R250 reward for capturing illegal foreign nationals is false,” the South African government said in an alert posted to its official social media accounts.
“Please ignore and do not share this misinformation. Always verify official government announcements through credible sources.”

The poster claims that “anyone who can catch and bring an illegal foreign national in South Africa will receive R250 per illegal immigrant”.
