Fake Insta post spreads false storm warning - Times of India

Panaji: An Instagram post by a user Azad Singh, carrying false claims about stormy weather and dangerous sea conditions in Goa surfaced online, raising concerns over AI-generated misinformation, which creates nuisance targeting tourists and residentsThe post, accompanied by a video of massive waves crashing along the coast, urged tourists to avoid the coastal belt.However, the video appears to be created using artificial intelligence tools and does not reflect current conditions in Goa.The misleading post claimed that Goa’s coastal areas were experiencing high tides and rough sea waves so powerful that water flooded promenades and reached roads.It added that while Goa is usually known for calm beaches and fun, nature had shown a “dangerous mood”.The social media account, posing as a news channel, blamed the alleged unpredictable weather, extreme tides and sudden sea rise on climate change and warned people to stay away from coastal areas.“There are scrupulous people out to tarnish the image of our Goa. The cyber crime department should take strict action and issue heavy punishment forany false AI generated material surfacing online,” said John Lobo, general secretary of the Shack Owners Welfare Society, Goa.
