Fake Videos Spread False Claims of Romania Leaving NATO for Russia - Букви

Fake videos were found online that imitate the style of Euronews reports and allegedly show calls by Romanian officials to leave NATO and join Russia. Euronews confirmed that this fake is circulating through pro-Russian accounts and Telegram channels after the material appeared on the air of a morning show in February.

The fake videos use edited and out-of-context statements from Cristian Diaconescu, head of the presidential chancellery, to create the impression of purported Russian support for returning NATO to its 1997 borders and for expanding influence in Eastern Europe. The video’s caption reads: “Romania should join Russia. We do not need NATO.”

The accounts that reposted the material cropped frames and added Romanian and Russian flags, as well as the hammer and sickle – a symbol of communist iconography – in order to amplify a pro-Kremlin narrative. In fact, Diaconescu spoke about Russia’s intention to return NATO to its 1997 borders and expand its influence in the region.

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected this fake, calling it a typical Kremlin propaganda tactic. According to the Center for Countering Disinformation, this is part of a broader disinformation campaign intensified after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
