SALLISAW, Okla. — Lawyers for the family of one of the Eastside Elementary students accused of sexually assaulting a boy on the playground on Oct. 14 have issued a statement calling the allegations "false and sensationalized."
A letter from Jones Gotcher Attorney and Counselors, who represent the family of one of the accused, claims that what happened was not sexual assault and that the boys were all friends who continued to play together after the incident.
"Horseplay by a group of boys has somehow evolved into sexual assault allegations that have destroyed reputations and upended the lives of these children and their families," the letter reads.
The family went on to say through the letter that "It is apparent that anyone can say anything they want, and the virtual world believes it and will spread it like wildfire. However, we stand firm in our faith and in the good of humanity. These visceral social media and news media performances should not be accepted and must be stopped."
The mother of the alleged victim told 5NEWS on Oct. 16 that she was told her son was sexually assaulted by a group of boys during recess after receiving a call from Sallisaw Public Schools on the day of the incident.
She told 5NEWS that she was later shown a video of the incident and plans to press charges.
