False claim about a Kashmiri PhD run over by an Indian Army Vehicle shared - dfrac.org

A tragic incident, respected Kashmiri scholar and educator recently lost his life. Sadly, amid this, Pakistani accounts began circulating misleading narratives about his untimely demise.

Pakistan-based accounts alleged that Dr. Zubair Rather, a PhD scholar from Ajas, Bandipora, and father of three, was deliberately run over by an Indian Army vehicle two days ago and later succumbed to his injuries.

An account named @ObaidurRehman36 shared the claim, “Dr. Zubair Rather, a PhD scholar from Ajas, Bandipora, and father of three, was run over by an occupying Indian army vehicle two days ago. He succumbed to his injuries today.”

Several other accounts were also found amplifying the same misleading claim, as seen here and here.

Fact Check

Upon investigation, we found the claim to be false. According to Greater Kashmir, the Indian Army clarified that Dr. Zubair Rather was attempting to overtake an Army vehicle on a narrow stretch when his motorbike skidded and accidentally collided with the vehicle.

The report further informed that the Army has said that they assisted in every possible way, including helping evacuate him to the hospital. “It is a sad incident, and what we have said is based on facts,” the Army Commanding Officer of 13-RR, who oversees various units and sits in Manasbal, told Greater Kashmir. “We do not want to comment on it any further,” he added, suggesting it was painful.
