False claims about Trump’s attempted assassination receive over 100M views on X - Institute for Strategic Dialogue

Following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on Saturday, false and unverified claims flooded social media. ISD identified the main narratives that proliferated in the 24 hours after the incident and followed their trail across fringe and mainstream platforms. The New York Times features our findings.

Within 24 hours of the incident, content referencing false and unverified claims about the attempted assassination received over 100 million views on X (formerly known as Twitter). In comparison, false flag claims and related conspiracies about the 2022 Uvalde school shooting garnered 35.1 million views in the first 24 hours.

The most widespread narratives included false claims about the shooter’s identity, accusations that the Secret Service allowed the attack, and calls for civil war.
