False claims in EIA report for Koradi power plant expansion: NGO’s letter - Times of India

Nagpur: Civil societies and citizens continue to raise strong objections against the expansion of coal-fired Koradi Thermal Power Station.
Centre for Sustainable Development (CFSD), an NGO from the city, has submitted a complaint letter to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), union ministers Bhupendra Yadav and Nitin Gadkari and other authorities, urging them to opt for cleaner energy sources like solar.
Highlighting that Mahagenco’s existing plants at both Koradi and Khaparkheda have failed to comply with environmental norms, founder of the NGO, Leena Buddhe, wrote, “The power plants are already posing a serious threat to the land, water (both surface and groundwater), air, human health, health of the livestock and the livelihood of farmers. In view of this, MPCB too has repeatedly issued them notices and imposed fines on Mahagenco. It is evident that this expansion will only cause more harm to the environment and public health.”
Further slamming the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report of the proposed two 660 megawatt (MW) units, Buddhe stated that the report makes false claims when it comes to environment. “Contrary to the tall claims of the environmental condition (EC) compliance, the groundwater parameters are not in the desirable range, the natural drains and toe drains are full of ash deposits, there is no regular water sprinkling on nearby roads and there is no HDP/LDP lining in the existing ash bund,...
