False viral posts about Florida education law left without fact-checks - KATV

WASHINGTON (TND) — Several posts on social media about a bill signed last year by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis caught a lot of attention for allegedly requiring students and staff at public universities to report their political views, even though the claims are false.

The bill, signed in 2021, requires public universities and colleges to conduct surveys with students and staffs about their beliefs to support “intellectual diversity.”

When he signed the bill, DeSantis said he was concerned about the exchanging of ideas on college campuses and conservative ideas may be stifled. The law, which took effect last July, requires public schools to assess “viewpoint diversity” through a survey developed by the state’s board of education.

The legislation defines intellectual freedom and viewpoint diversity as “the exposure of students, faculty, and staff to, and the encouragement of their exploration of, a variety of ideological and political perspectives.”

False claims have resurfaced a year after the bill was signed, and some social media platforms have been slow to attach a fact-check label to posts indicating they are missing information.

On Twitter, several tweets from prominent accounts were left without a label for over 24 hours despite thousands of retweets.
