Fatal industrial accident deaths at workplaces with fewer than five employees have shown a V-shaped rebound over five years. Excluding these small workplaces, fatal industrial accidents are declining as a trend. A fundamental review is needed to determine whether the current system and administrative capacity can reduce fatal accidents at sub-5 employee workplaces.
According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor's industrial accident compensation data based on survivor benefit approval dates, 202 workers died in fatal industrial accidents at sub-5 employee workplaces from January to September 2023, the lowest figure for the same period from 2021 to this year.
Fatal accidents at sub-5 employee workplaces have traced a V-shaped pattern over five years. Deaths dropped sharply from 260 in 2021 to 202 in 2023, then rose to 221 last year and 270 this year. This trend mirrors that of all workplaces, where fatal accidents fell from 678 in 2021 to a low of 590 in 2023 before climbing to 675 this year.
Fatal accidents at workplaces with five or more employees, excluding sub-5 firms, are declining as a trend. Deaths fell from 418 in 2021 to 405 this year. Fatal accident prevention at sub-5 employee workplaces is directly linked to overall workplace safety.
