Alex Shultz, the father of Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz, addressed the court ahead of Elizabeth Holmes’s sentencing. He discussed her vengeance against his son, who was also a source for The Wall Street Journal stories starting in 2015 that investigated Theranos’s technical failings.
Mr. Shultz turned to Ms. Holmes’s partner in the courtroom, Billy Evans, and told him he empathized with how people followed Mr. Evans around because of his association with Ms. Holmes. He could empathize, said Mr. Shultz, because Ms. Holmes had hired a private investigator to follow and terrorize his family.
“My son slept with a knife under his pillow every night thinking that someone was going to come and murder him in the night,” Mr. Shultz told the court.
Mr. Shultz’s dad, former Secretary of State Geroge Shultz, was a Theranos investor and board director, and introduced the family to Ms. Holmes. Alex Shultz said Ms. Holmes preyed upon his dad’s weakness.
“My dad never wanted to become irrelevant,” Mr. Shultz said. “Elizabeth Holmes recognized that weakness, targeted him and became part of that window dressing.” She put a stain on his father’s career, Mr. Shultz said.
“We are happy that this is finally coming to an end,” Mr. Shultz said.
Ms. Holmes was crying at the conclusion of Mr. Shultz’s comments.
