LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins announced his retirement Friday, effective immediately, amid an ongoing whistleblower complaint and a fresh credit rating downgrade that he blamed on decades of financial irregularities and school board failures.
Fayette County Board of Education Chair Tyler Murphy confirmed that the board received a retirement notice from Liggins and that it will be presented at a meeting scheduled for next Monday.
“The Board has received a retirement notice from Dr. Liggins. Pursuant to KRS 161.780, the notice will be presented to the Board at our August 17th meeting,” Murphy said in a statement. “We have no additional information at this time. Our focus remains on wrapping up a successful start to the new school year for our students, staff, and families.”
Liggins, the 2026 Kentucky Superintendent of the Year, said a Moody’s Investors Service downgrade of the school district’s credit rating on Thursday was the “last straw.” In his announcement, Liggins accused the school board of feigning his resignation in June, holding an illegal meeting regarding his employment, and wasting public funds on double superintendent salaries and outside legal counsel.
